Review – Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter

With the purchase of the new MacBook Pro last month it also meant the need to purchase a new dvi adapter since Apple switched from mini-dvi to mini-displayport.  This is normally one of those $30 accessories you just buy when you buy a new Mac, but I decided that I’d try a little experiment. I found a dealer on eBay selling a “generic” mini-displayport to dvi adapter for under $14 shipped. I went into this endeavor not having high hopes for it because I’ve seen reports of the official mini-displayport adapters having problems, but $15 is a small price to pay to see if I saved $15 from buying the official one or if a $30 adapter would actually cost me $45.

The “generic” ones are plentiful on eBay and range in price between $10-$25 but the bulk of them ship from China, most for free but still take about a week to get to you, especially if you live in the great northeast like I do. I found a dealer in Denver had one for $13.95 shipped, so I ordered and three days later I got it.

The first thing you notice about it is that the packaging is almost identical to the official apple one but the color of the adapter isn’t white and it isn’t as rounded. The color is more light beige, think classic pc parts, the dvi connector is a rounded rectangle and is a bit fatter. I remove it from the package and hook up the monitor, put the MacBook to sleep, close the lid, plug it in, hold my breath and say “oh mighty MacBook please awaken from your slumber” like I do every time I wake up the MacBook and voila, I’m looking at my desktop magically taken from the actual MacBook to the beautiful widescreen color corrected monitor. No defects, no odd lines no fuzzy text, just a crisp clear image…test one, pass. Then I open up the MacBook and see if it will pull off a mirrored and extended desktop to see if I get the same results…test two, pass.

In the end, I actually can’t say anything bad about the “generic” mini-displayport to dvi adapter from Betamacs-Sales in Denver, Colorado, the offered free fast shipping on a product that did what it is supposed to and it saved me a couple of large lattes.

    POSITIVES
+ price, a net savings of over $15 over the official version
    + it works
    + true plug and play

    NEGATIVES

    • it isn’t white
    • it is a bit fatter

The negatives aren’t really worth mentioning unless you are a true Apple “i” person who feels that their current product is rendered obsolete by the introduction of a new or refreshed product.

    Final: Highly Recommended

Can I ask how long is the cable length? It looks about 6″ so did you have an issue with the distance from the MacBook to the monitor?

Hi Henry. Sorry for the late response, it is about 6 inches long and actually this plugs into the monitor DVI cable. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Chris. Happy to have found your post as I’m troubleshooting my adapter now. I picked one up a few weeks ago. Awesome out of the packaging, but now my MBP refuses to detect my monitor, or flickers blue to black in the way it does as it usually moves to monitor spanning mode, only it never makes it all the way, just flickers and then turns blue.

Have you had any problems or know any tricks to try? Have tried all manner of restarting/plug-in/etc combinations I could come up with.

      Thanks!

        Hi Sterling.

Sorry about the late reply to this but I’ve been using mine for quite a while now with no issues. The only thing I could think of is to head on into the Apple Store and see if they can test your mini-DisplayPort connection, if that’s not an option you could always buy/borrow a different adapter and see if you have the same problem. Other than that it could be the actual DVI cable.

        Thanks for stopping by.

    iPhone 3.0 Thoughts

If you haven’t heard yet, the iPhone 3.0 software will be previewed next Tuesday, March 18th. There are so many features that the customers of the iPhone have been wanting for so long and iPhone 3.0 looks like a great chance for all of these things to be included in the iPhone.

The first feature that everybody wants desperately is copy and paste. For months now many consumers in the tech industry have been criticizing the iPhone for not having copy and paste when many other phones already have it. All smart phones should have copy and paste including the iPhone.

Another big feature that could come in the 3.0 upgrade is the “push notifications” feature that Apple promised us back in September. Since Apple wanted to “get it right the first time”, they have been putting the push notifications off for a while. I for one am very excited about the feature coming to the iPhone because this would work great for applications like, Twitter or AIM on your iPhone. Hopefully this will get added as soon as possible because it is over due.

MMS. Come on Apple! This should have been in the iPhone OS long ago and everybody knows it. It is very sad that the iPhone hasn’t had this put in yet. Even the most basic Verizon and AT&T phones have this, and have had this for years now. This should definitely be put into the 3.0 update and should have been in long ago.

The last feature that could be added to the 3.0 firmware is tethering. This would be very nice to have on the iPhone. Personally I don’t think the iPhone will get this right now, at least not for the 3.0 upgrade. There haven’t been many rumors about it and I really don’t see Apple doing this just yet.

I am very optimistic about the new 3.0 update to the iPhone. I think they could put in so many valuable features and improve the stability all around. I would love to hear what all of you think, so please leave a comment.

I wish Apple would add video capture to the iPhone. It’s possible with Cycorder and other third-party applications, but I don’t want to jailbreak my iPhone.

Push works in my mail app on the iPhone. Maybe you’re referring to bookmarks and the address book and other apps.

    iPhone clones

I’m getting pretty tired of all of the iPhone clones. If you haven’t noticed there are so many new phones coming out that don’t have a stylus and you just touch them with your finger. Let’s name them! Blackberry Storm, LG Voyager, LG Dare, G1, and some Nokia phones. Just like Apple and Steve Jobs wanted it to be. It just seems like everyone is coming out with touch screen devices, but the touch screens on them are absolutely terrible.

Now personally I love touch screen phones, if they work. I just recently went to my local Verizon store and tried out the LG Voyager. I don’t want this to be a complete bash on the LG Voyager but their touch screens are absolutely terrible. I really don’t think I could get use to that touch screen because it is a lot worse than the iPod touch. Which is what I use for my touch screen device. For all of you who have an iPhone or iPod touch here is a question for you. Do you feel that all of the other touch screen phones and devices are terrible quality compared to you iPhone or iPod touch?

I certainly do. I think that every company with a touch screen device just rushed their product out the door to compete with the iPhone when they should have took their time and actually made a quality touch screen. I would love to hear you thoughts on this, please leave comments.

    Thoughts on the new MacBooks

Just last Tuesday Apple released a whole new line up of MacBooks, and right now I have to say, they look amazing! I really like that they took the new iMac look, because I loved the new iMac when they came out.

I will start off with my thoughts on the new MacBook. The MacBook, in my opinion looks fantastic. I really like the new aluminum design and I think that it looks more elegant and professional than the older plastic one. Even though I would have loved a black MacBook, I think that these will top the older generation. The first and most noticeable change they made in the internal design was the track pad. The track pad now has no button, the track pad is the button. I really like this idea. I think at first it will be very had to get use to but in the end it will be a habit and everyone will love it. The track pad is now glass. Yes, there were some rumors about the new track pad being glass and it looks like they came true. I haven’t seen or played with the new MacBooks yet. So I’m not sure if I like this idea, but everyone that has one on YouTube seems to be liking it.

I have two complaints with the new MacBook. One, there is no firewire in it. Two, the price increased instead of decreasing like it should be in this terrible economy. The first complaint, no firewire is terrible. Apple invented firewire back when they made the Mac and they don’t include it in their own computers? When is the last time when someone invented something and they didn’t include that invention in the next creation that they made? I thought that it was really weird for Apple to not put this in their MacBook and MacBook Pro. Also, the price increase for the MacBook is absolutely terrible. Our economy is doing very, very, bad in these times and all of our prices should be going down so people can afford them not up! There is not much more I can say about this but the price should have been dropped.

Now to the MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro looks the same as the MacBook. Aluminum inside and outside, with the black border around the screen. This in itself could be a big mistake for Apple. In the past the MacBook and the MacBook Pro have always had a feature so you could know which one the Pro was. Now with the new update, they are exactly the same except for the size. Apple also “discontinued” the 17″ MacBook Pro. I think that this was a mistake, although you can buy the old one I think people will really like the new one and they will want to buy that one. I think in the next few months Apple will release a 17″ MacBook Pro. Also, the MacBook Pro doesn’t have FireWire, again, that is a problem. The last problem I have with the MacBook Pro is the fact that there is only 2 USB ports. That is absolutely terrible, 2 usb ports on a Pro machine? Apple has always had more than two on their Pro machines. The MacBook Pro needs more than two. But, even though the MacBook price went up the MacBook Pro price stayed the same. I think this was a good idea even though the MacBook should have stayed the same too.

But these are just my thoughts. I’m sure others would say some of the same things but many different ones. If you have any thoughts please leave a comment. I would love to hear your opinion, you can email me at gadgetsandtech@gmail.com.

I got a new MacBook a few days ago, to replace my MacBook Pro. Except for the lack of FireWire, it comes very close to being my ideal laptop. It’s faster than my old MBP, has a larger hard drive, and weighs about a pound less.

    The New iPod nanos

Apple recently released all new iPods for their Christmas line up, as they do all most every year. This year they completely redesigned the iPod nano, and I love the redesign.

Last year there was some speculation on weather people would like the “short” design of the iPod nano. At the time I think people loved it. I saw a lot of my friends getting them for Christmas. I even got one for my mom for Mother’s Day last year. Everyone thought that the new one looked great so they bought it. Looking back on it now, I hate the fat look. It’s crazy how Apple can just kind of “brain wash” you to buy almost any product that they put out there.

I love the new iPod nano design and I don’t think it is just the “brain washing” from Apple. The second I saw all of those colors at the special event, I was stunned. Seriously, I think the new iPods look fantastic. They have a bigger screen so you can watch videos easier and they are very thin. You could barely see it in the keynote when he was holding it up on it’s side. I can’t wait to get one of them in my hand.

They also put some new features into the iPod nano. Features like the accelerometer and shake to shuffle. You can now turn one of the new iPod nanos on it’s side and you can get coverflow. This was something brand new with this iPod, no other iPod had an accelerometer in it but the iPod touch. The second feature is shake to shuffle. All you have to do it shake your iPod and it shuffles the music just like if you where to click shuffle on your iPod. The new iPod nano looks amazing and I can’t wait to get it into my hand and see other people with them. Great job Apple on making yet another amazing product.

New iPod nanos and iPod touches! (Rumors)

Well these two rumors have been around for a while, the 4G iPod nano and the 2G iPod touch. Personally I can’t wait for either. They both seem to have great changes to their “form”, I can’t wait to see how the new ones look.

By the rumors the 4G iPod nano is going back to its last “tall” form, and it is going to have curved edges just like the newer MacBook Air. The new 3G iPhone also has the curved back to it. I personally don’t like the tall nano, I think that the short one looks a lot better, but I understand that they want to enlarge the screen for viewing video. l I like the new curved products by Apple, I think they make them look amazing. I do wonder about the colors that they will be available with. I think that I like the new 3G colors compared to the 2G colors.

The new iPod touch, also has many changes to it’s look. For starters the back is looking more like the iPhone, which I think is a great idea. The second change is on the side, volume buttons! I know many people in the Apple community have wanted this for so long and it looks like it will finally get put on the new iPod touch. The one thing that I would really want for the next iPod touch to have is for it to be available in colors. I’m not talking about blue, green, and red. Just the black and white like the iPhone, I would love that.

There are many rumors that the iPod touch will be getting GPS. I have mixed feelings about having GPS in the iPod touch, but I personally don’t think it is a good idea. I think if it got GPS, a lot of people that want iPhones would just buy the iPod touch and they wouldn’t have to deal with the cell phone plan and AT&T. I think that I would rather have a speaker and a mic. I think so many people would buy the iPod touch if it had a speaker, it would be so nice not to have to use your headphones all the time.

So, I can’t wait till September 9th. It should be a great day. So what do you think about these new rumored iPod’s? Do you like the new iPod nano? Should the iPod touch have GPS? Let me know what you think, leave a comment or email us at gadgetsandtech@gmail.com.

Do you want to learn about Steve Jobs?

I just recently bought iCon: Steve Jobs off of Amazon for only a couple of dollars. iCon is a really good book for anyone who wants to know about Steve Jobs and what he did before Apple and Pixar. The book even tells you some very interesting facts about when he was very young and still in school. I have learned many things about Steve through this book and I’m only on the first couple of chapters!

This book also talks about the other people that made Apple possible. Mainly Steve Wozniak, they talk about him and Steve and how they became friends. Another interesting thing that you find out in this book is Steve’s earlier jobs before he even came close to starting Apple. I thought it was very interesting. I really like this book.

I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in Apple as a company. And if you are interested in Steve Jobs and want to know a lot more about his life and how he came to “power” in Apple. Here is the link to Amazon to buy iCon: Steve Jobs.

    Operating System Hate, (Mac Side)

Everyone who uses a computer knows that there are two main operating systems, Mac OS X and Windows. The fight between the two has gone on for many years and will continue for a very long time. I have decided to write about the two sides and why they hate each other so much. This post will be based on the Mac side and the next will be the Windows side.

There are many reasons why Mac (or Apple) users hate Windows users or the operating system in general. The first reason which is also probably the biggest is viruses. Everyone knows that Windows will get more viruses than a Mac will. Windows users sometimes say that the only reason this is true is because Windows has more market share. I do believe this is a good point. But I would have to say that Apple is doing a better job with the viruses than Microsoft is.

Another reason why Mac users might hate Windows is Vista. Almost everyone in the computer industry knows that Vista was a Microsoft failure. I have a computer running Windows Vista, and I have to say that Vista is remarkably slower than XP was. Because people have been noticing this there have been a huge amount of people that have downgraded to XP. The Apple, Get a Mac ads have also displayed this Vista problem.

The last reason why I think Mac users hate Windows is Errors. Some of you might have seen the Get a Mac ad when PC has all of the errors on the cart. Well I have used Windows and I have gotten some crazy errors in my Windows days. This is a defiantly a big reason for some people who work in businesses, because they can’t have their computers have a fatal error in the middle of a job. Even normal casual computer users just thing these errors are annoying (I know I do). Even though Windows might have worse errors, Mac OS X has some errors too, so don’t think Mac OS X is the most amazing operating system is the best.

The Windows side should be out soon.

    Nike+ for iPhone?

As you probably know, there have been some rumors of the Nike+ features coming to the iPhone. I think that this would be a great move by Apple for two reasons. One, a lot of people will buy it which just means more money for Apple. Two, Apple could realy make an impression on the “workout” community.

Even if only a fraction of Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch users bought this that would be so much money for them. The device it self is $29 and they might charge for it. I would guess around 5 to 10 dollars, but this might only be for the iPod touch, from what we have been recently been seeing.

Another reason why Apple should implement this is to kind of “get their foot in the door” in the workout community. Nike and Apple could do amazing things with their iPods and the connections that Nike has. Also, almost everyone in the United States knows what an iPhone is and this could get them even more publicity and reasons for people to buy it.

I hope that Apple makes the right decision and implements the Nike+ features for the iPhone and iPod touch because I would defiantly buy one. Some other people are saying that it is just a matter of time before they do that, like it will defiantly happen but I wouldn’t count our eggs before they are hatched.

I just received a 16GB touch for my birthday, but unfortunately I have about 20 GB of music/videos etc. I expect this number to grow, so I am considering exchanging the 16GB touch for a 80GB classic for the greater storage capacity. I am still undecided because I really like the wifi and other added features of the touch. However, I also have an Eee PC, which is really enough to fulfill my portable wifi and web needs. Still, the touch has many more features over the classic. Which should I get? Thanks for the help!
